About our client

An award-winning German multinational company and a market leader in the field of precision gearboxes, high-performance motors, electronics and nanotechnology is seeking a Managing Director, based in Malaysia. Providing customer-specific complete solutions for a range of industries including medical technology, aviation and security industries, this dynamic company has operations worldwide and across the region.

 

To strengthen its footprint in Southeast Asia, the company is now searching for a Managing Director to take on the exciting role of establishing a local presence in Malaysia.

 

 

Job Description

The Managing Director will set up the new sales office in Malaysia and lead the subsidiary in a sustainable manner, in line with the company’s core values. The Director will be expected to represent the company nationally and internationally. Reporting will be directly to the CSO of the group at the European headquarters.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and lead the sales subsidiary, including Malaysian office set-up, building a local team, and establishing operational processes
  • Develop and implement sales strategies to achieve business objectives and revenue targets
  • Manage the P&L of the subsidiary, ensuring financial performance aligns with company goals
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients and stakeholders
  • Build-up, screen and manage external distributors and distribution partners
  • Provide technical expertise and support to the sales team and clients, particularly in the areas of gearboxes and motors
  • Monitor market trends and competitor activities to identify new business opportunities
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations and company policies

 

The successful applicant should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field. Master’s degree desirable but not essential
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in sales and management roles in the drive technology industry, including multinational companies (preferably European) or have held an international role previously
  • National and international network in relevant industries 
  • Strong technical understanding of gearboxes, motors, and other drive technologies 
  • Strong relationships with customers of drive technology users ie. semiconductors, machine tools, food processing and packaging, etc.
  • Strong distribution network in relevant industries with distribution management experience
  • Proven track record of successfully establishing and managing a sales organization, including the setup and integration of after-sales support and technical service teams
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to work independently and make strategic decisions  
  • Malaysian national 
  • Fluent in English with local language proficiency
  • Willingness to travel as required

The Position: Managing Director (m/f)

The managing Director is the speaker of the Management Board and holds the final authority to manage the company. This includes, but is not limited to the following functions:

 

  • Sales & Marketing 
  • R&D and Engineering 
  • Procurement Finance, Accounting and Reporting 
  • IT & Systems (MRP System) 
  • Quality Assurance 
  • Production 
  • Logistics 
  • Human Resource

…with a higher focus on the first six topics. The present Managing Director is expected to retire and a six months joined training phase is envisaged, during which the candidate will work as a General Manager within the organization. 

 

The position entails a close co-operation with the headquarter´s management and its shareholders. It comes with the challenge to manage the entity according to the group´s vision and mission and provide relevant regional insight for the global strategy.

The Candidate

The ideal candidate come with the ability to manage multiple, diverse and complex challenges, driven by the responsibility for all departments mentioned above. 

 

Education 

  • Mechanical or electrical engineering degree. An economic MBA degree is an add-on.

 

Experience

  • At least 10 years of management experience in a similar industry and environment. 
  • Proven success under similar conditions, preferably in the area of electrical distribution.
  • Strong understanding of the insulator industry, including market trends, customer needs, and competitor landscape.

 

Skills & Competencies 

  • Strong leadership, negotiation, and communication skills. 
  • Familiar to read, analyse and influence Balance Sheet, P&L Statement and Cash-flow.
  • Readiness of mind to learn fast, ability to prioritize and develop effective measures.
  • Ability to think strategically and execute plans effectively. Sees the big picture and can develop the company further.

Your key responsibilities will be to support the sales strategy development and execution to drive business growth in both existing and new markets. This includes, but is not limited to: 

 

  • Establish and achieve revenue and profit targets, aligned with the company's business objectives. 
  • Monitor market trends and competitive landscape to identify new opportunities for insulators and measuring technology, both domestically and internationally. 
  • Lead and manage the sales team to ensure they meet performance targets. 
  • Provide regular sales reports and forecasts to the Management Board. 
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key customers, suppliers, and partners. 
  • Oversee the negotiation and closing of major sales deals.

The Candidate 

Education 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and/or Technical Sales, or a related field. An economic MBA degree is an add-on.

 

Experience 

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in sales within the industrial, electrical, or manufacturing sectors.
  • Proven track record of achieving sales targets and driving business growth, specifically in insulators or related electrical products.
  • Strong understanding of the insulator industry, including market trends, customer needs, and competitor landscape. 
  • Experience in selling and marketing electrical insulators and high-performance materials within the energy, utilities, or industrial sectors is highly desirable.

 

Skills & Competencies 

  • Strong leadership, negotiation, and communication skills. 
  • Ability to think strategically and execute plans effectively. 
  • Deep understanding of the sales cycle and customer needs in the electrical infrastructure sector. 
  • Proficiency in CRM software, Microsoft Office, and sales analytics tools. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
