The implementation of a self-assessment system for stamp duty started is scheduled to begin on 1 January 2026. Businesses and individuals would need to determine whether a document is a stamp able instrument, identify its category under the Stamp Act 1949, and calculate the payable stamp duty. We will focus on the practical aspects of the new stamping portal, and highlight potential risks and pitfalls for stamp duty payers.

Speaker profile

Lukas Kirchhof practice focuses on Corporate/M&A and Commercial Law. He studied law at the University of Würzburg and the University of Bristol. His Master's degree (LL.M.) in International Economic Law was obtained from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He completed his legal training at the Higher Regional Court of Frankfurt, with stations in the Philippines and China. Prior to joining Luther, Lukas Kirchhof worked for international law firms in Frankfurt, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong.

Maike Rohwer primarily provides international tax advisory services to companies, institutional investors and individuals. She has worked on numerous transactions, M&A and restructuring projects. She has a broad knowledge of Malaysia taxation, including corporate tax, individual tax, capital gains tax, sales tax and service tax.
