As Malaysia rolls out the first phase of its 2026 tax reforms, CGT rules have become broader, more complex, and significantly more stringent. From 1 January 2026, CGT may apply even without a sale, creating new implications for restructurings, share transactions, and group reorganisations.

Michael Cheah is a Director at Crowe Malaysia, with over 12 years of experience in tax advisory and compliance, specialising in corporate and individual taxation, international tax, restructuring, tax incentives, Real Property Gains Tax (RPGT) and stamp duty. He advises both domestic and multinational clients across a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, property development, oil & gas, the digital economy and healthcare.
Michael has been actively involved in mergers and acquisitions, IPOs, cross‑border tax structuring and group reorganisations, helping businesses navigate complex Malaysian tax regulations while managing risk and compliance. He is a member of CPA Australia and MIA, a Fellow of CTIM, a licensed tax agent under Section 153 of the Income Tax Act 1967, and an HRD Corp Accredited Trainer, bringing both technical depth and practical insight to CGT planning under Malaysia’s evolving tax landscape.
